Virginia L. McDermott

LEAVITTSBURG – Virginia L. McDermott passed away peacefully in her sleep at 12:45 a.m. on January 10, 2011 at Gillette Nursing Home. Virginia, born May 16, 1915 in Oak Harbor, OH, was the fourth child of Dr. R.R. Rogers and Lena Stanton Rogers. The family later moved to the Warren area, where Virginia attended Warren G. Harding and Warren Township schools. On May 11, 1934 she married Charles J. McDermott in Mercer, PA. They celebrated 64 years of marriage before Charles passed away on October 2, 1998. Affectionately known as “Mudder” to many family members, Virginia was first and foremost a loving homemaker. She cared for, in so many ways, five generations of her family, especially loving to cook and bake for them. She was a retired manager of The Holiday Shop, which was located in the Trumbull Plaza. As a long-time member of the First Community Church of Leavittsburg, Virginia served on the Deaconess Board. She also belonged to the Warren Township Volunteer Firemen Women’s Auxiliary. Virginia is survived by four children: DarLena (Ausmer) Tuttle, Champion, Robert McDermott, Southington; Charles (Erla) McDermott, Braceville; Louise (Charles) Bromley, E. Randolph, NY; seven grandchildren: Gary (j’Nice) Tuttle, William Tuttle, James (Therese) Tuttle, Nancy (Gary) Hart, Rob (Debbie) McDermott, Tim (Lynne) McDermott, Jen Kackermeyer; twelve great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Morley Rogers and Rolland Rogers, and sisters, Beverly Frazier and Lois Mundorf. The family extends their grateful thanks to Gillette Nursing Home staff for the compassionate care they provided, and also to Harbor Light Hospice who helped make her last days easier. Calling hours will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at McFarland and Son Funeral Home, and 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday at First Community Church of Leavittsburg. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 14, 2011 at First Community Church, with Rev. John Jaros officiating. Interment will follow the service at Pine Knoll Cemetery.
