George W. Devoe

Cincinnati - George W. DeVoe, 91, formerly of Warren, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 at The Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was born January 15, 1918 in Warren, Ohio, the son of the late C. Edgar DeVoe and the late Cathryn Ryan and lived in the Warren area most of his life. He was self-employed as an industrial sales representative from 1976 until his retirement in 1983. He had also worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. in industrial sales and was vice president of sales for Trumbull Supply & Manufacturing Co. Mr. DeVoe graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1936 and Kenyon College in 1940. He was a combat infantryman and scout with the 76th Infantry Division of the 3rd Army from June 1941 through October 1945. Mr. DeVoe participated in battles and campaigns of the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, the American Defense Service Medal and the Bronze Star Medal for exceptional courage against an enemy of the U.S. in Germany on Feb. 9, 1945. A life long member of the First United Methodist Church of Warren and a life member and former president of the Buckeye Club. He also belonged to the VFW, the American Legion, the Trumbull County Historical Society, the Trumbull Memorial Hospital Corp. and the Packard Museum Association. Mr. DeVoe was also a member of the Trumbull Country Club for over 40 years. Mr. DeVoe lived the last 8 � years of his life in Cincinnati with his daughter, Ann, where he was known by his many friends for his quick wit and sense of humor. He was an avid golfer who also enjoyed tennis and playing cards with his buddies. He knew Jesus as his Lord and Savior, and knew he will be reunited with his family and his Heavenly Father. Mr. DeVoe is survived by his daughters Ann W. DeVoe and Jane (Wendal) Shaw and two grandchildren Ashley and Keith Shaw. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jane Olson DeVoe, whom he married May 16, 1946 and who died March 16, 1993 and an infant daughter. Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday December 22, 2009 at The McFarland & Son Funeral Home. The Reverends Rick Oaks and Jim Bloom will co-officiate. Friends may call Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Interment will follow in the North Orwell Cemetery.
